The Trans-Atlantic Fan Fund is one of the longest-running institutions of science fiction fandom. It still magically wafts its democratically chosen delegates from Europe to North America, and vice versa, offering Cultural Interchange and an opportunity to see what those weirdos across the water are actually like. Not all winners have published the once traditional full-length trip report ... but portions of many incomplete reports exist, and should not be forgotten. Some may yet be completed. This document lists what is known. A shorter table of TAFF publications available on line appears here.
To give the illusion of rigorous research, TAFF winners are listed chronologically with pointers to indicate eastward (>>) or westward (<<) transatlantic trips.
The listing was compiled by Dave Langford, with inputs from Gary Farber, Kim Huett, Jerry Kaufman, Bruce Pelz, Joyce Scrivner, Pam Wells, the "Timebinders" e-mail list in general, and several more of the winners below. Information has been incorporated from the very useful "TAFF Winners and their Trip Reports" by Teresa & Patrick Nielsen Hayden in Sticky Quarters 12 ed. Brian Earl Brown, 1985. A version of the list containing extracts from various incomplete TAFF reports, but much less bibliographical detail, was published as issue 97 1/2 of Ansible in August 1995. Under Construction: Voting breakdowns were first added to this list in April 2005. If you can fill the remaining gap at 1973, or give more details of races where the geographical breakdown is incomplete (e.g. 1983) or missing (1956, 1996, 2001) please let me know! 1952 << Walt Willis
Technically pre-TAFF, but the start of it all. Since this was a one-off fund to bring Walt Willis to America, there were no other candidates and no voting.

Shelby Vick, who administered the US end of the fund, published reports, accounts, and a list of donors in his confusion 12 (1952). This includes Walt Willis's column "Plinth", looking forward to the trip and marvelling that "I happen to have been the accidental focus of the first concerted and successful effort of science fiction fandom."

Note: Vince Clarke could not make the trip. Decades later, in the 1990s, TAFF found itself reasonably flush and suggested that he might now like to take his TAFF trip ... but he declined. Vince died in 1998.
The later tradition was for the Fund to be administrated by the most recent European and the most recent North American TAFF delegate. For these early races, Walt Willis (1952) acted as European administrator and Don Ford (1959) as North American administrator.
