GUFFSTUFF ONE
March 1 1986

GUFFSTUFF is produced by Eve Harvey UK administrator for GUFF. For those of you who've never heard of it, the acronym stands for either the Get Up Fan Fund or Go Under Fan Fund, depending on your point of view, which is set up to raise sufficient money to exchange periodic ally European and Australian fans, Administrators for the Fund, who are only too pleased to receive your donations, are:

Australian – Justin Ackroyd, PO Box 2708X, Melbourne, Vic 3001, Australia

British – Eve Harvey, 43 Harrow Road, Carshalton, Surrey, SM5 3QH, UK

THE STORY SO FAR...

No, I didn't merely take the money and run. I know I've been quiet since my return from Aussiecon II but all that is going to change. GUFF (UK) is alive and well. This is the first of a regular newssheet to let everyone in Europe know that GUFF is around, and needs your interest and support.

THE RACE IS ON...

The last GUFF race took me to Melbourne in August last year, the next is up and running to bring an Aussie over to Conspiracy – the British Worldcon in August 1987. Timetable is as follows:

Nominations close: 17 March 1986
Voting commences: 28 March 1986
Voting closes: 31 January 1987

At present there are several people proposing to run, so life should get interesting. The latest list from Justin is: Valma Brown, Jean Weber, Tim Jones, Irwin Hirsh, Derrick Watson & Megan Flemming although not all nominations have yet been received.

MONEY, MONEY, M*O*N*E*Y.....

Joseph Nicholas handed me just over £1,000 as he passed on the laurels of administratorship after sterling work for 4 long years. This, alas, was spent in airfare (£850) and travel across the continent (boy, is Australia BIG). So UK accounts are pretty poor at the present time – not quite zero, but teetering on the brink. My aim is to replace the £1,000 by August 1987. Aussie funds are much healthier since the only drain from my trip was half the hotel bill for Aussiecon II (many thanks to the convention for covering the other half) and now stand at almost A$1,500. Justin advises that the airfare over to Britain is about A$2,000 and sees no reason why he shouldn't be able to raise this much by next year. Many thanks to COFF for their donation to UK funds at Novacon.

TRIP REPORTS...

Status on publication of trip reports for past winners is as follows:–

WHAT AM I BID FOR...

Having lugged boxes of material to Novacon and then to Mexicon II, without any of it being auctioned, I've decided to give up on convention fan auctions – at least until they use something like the system at Aussiecon II. Instead I've decided to copy TAFF, and run postal auctions. Details fo the first appear overleaf. If anyone has any material they would like to donate – PLEASE DO.

That's all for now folks – next issue due May 1 1986.

FOR SALE!

Yes, as noted overleaf, GUFF needs your cash but as ever you'll get some goodies in return. Never being too proud to pinch a good idea, we've been looking at how those masters of TAFF fundraising, the Nielsen Haydens, do it and have decided to copy their postal auction idea for some of the more 'valuable' items the rest being available on a first-come-first-served basis. The auction mate-' rial will be sold using a 2-stage bidding method, the results of the initial bids will be published in the next GUFFSTUFF and the final bidding in the issue after. So let's have your bids for the following gems (in £sterling, though payment is acceptable in £ or A$). Sorry there are no piles of Hyphens, anybody want to donate some? Anybody want to donate anything, please?
