1 February 1987 – actually on time for the first time in its life!
GUFFSTUFF 4 is produced by Eve Harvey, UK administrator for GUFF. For those of you who've never heard of it, the acronym stands for either the Get Up Fan Fund or Go Under Fan Fund, depending on your point of view, which is set up to raise sufficient money to exchange periodically European and Australian fans. Administrators for the Fund, who are only too pleased to receive your donations, are:
Australian – Irwin Hirsh, 2/416 Dandenong Rd, Caulfield North, Victoria 3161, Australia
European – Eve Harvey, 43 Harrow Road, Carshalton, Surrey, SM5 3QH, UK
As is obvious from the above, the race has been run, Justin has handed over the mantle of authority, because.......
IRWIN WON GUFF!
So Irwin and his wife Wendy, will be coming over to Conspiracy, and hopefully other fannish occasions in August this year. As soon as I have further details of his plans, I'll let you all know. I received a warm and friendly reception from all the Aussies in 1985 – I hope Irwin feels the same after his trip.
HOW THE RACE WAS WON....
The Voters
Those votes that I, as UK Administrator, received were from the following:- D Franson, D Collins, M Glicksohn, O Whiteoak, D Langford, J Nicholas, J Hanna, P Wells, M Tudor, A Thomson, J Hibbert, D Rowley, D M Sherwood, P & T Nielsen Hayden, J Maule, R Gregg, S Francis, R Jackson, S Wagar, H Langford, R Lavender, R Lichtman, R Salomon, J Steward, J Kaufman, N Shears, R Macinski, N Trent, K Freeman, A Porter, M Feder, G & L Pickersgill, J Dallman, R Cantor, G Funnell, A Carol, D Hodson, G Haldeman, B Barrett, M Cantor, J Berry, J Harvey, A Burrows, R Robinson, W Willis, T Ferguson, C Mullan, M Moir, M Christie, R Hansen, K Oborn, B Peek, S Thomason, P Tortorici, C Lake, C Priest.
The Votes
The votes were counted by Justin, Australian preferential voting system supremo (according to himself, at least). In this method of counting, only first place votes are totalled in the first round. If the person with the most votes has not received over 50% of total votes cast, those receiving the lowest number of first-place votes are eliminated, and the second place votes redistributed, and so on until that 50% barrier is broken.
FIRST ROUND SECOND ROUND THIRD ROUND FINAL ROUND UK AUS TOTAL Valma Brown 18 23 41 41 57 63 Irwin Hirsh 25 44 69 76 91 120 Jean Weber 12 25 37 39 ELIMINATED Tim Jones 2 38 40 43 46 ELIMINATED Hold over Funds 0 2 2 ELIMINATED Larry Dunning 0 4 4 ELIMINATED Roger Weddell 0 3 3 ELIMINATED No Preference 2 3 5 ELIMINATED Marc Ortlieb 0 1 1 ELIMINATED Crocodile Dundee 0 1 1 ELIMINATED TOTAL 59 144 203 Other people receiving votes, though none with a first-place and therefore don't appear above are: Martha Beck (shame on you Dave!), Barbara de la Hunty and Paul Hogan (obviously without Crocodile). There were no disallowed votes from the UK, full details of the other side once Justin's let me know.
WHAT AM I BID FOR....
Last round....
Following on From last issue's second round, final bids have been received and the lucky winners are:-
- Joseph Nicholas – who increased his bid by £5 which countered Irwin's bid of A$2.50 for Ornithopter 1.
- Nick Shears – who is willing to part with £2.50 per copy for Science Fiction Review issues 50, 54 and 56 – and I'm more than happy to take £7.50 from him
- John Harvey – being hoist by his own petard in trying to increase Irwin's paltry bid for the Tynecon II package, John wins by Irwin's default of a counter. John also re-donates the package for -auction (having given me the £4, of course; fan-fund administration counters all normal marital privileges!).
GUFFSTUFF 3 AUCTION..........
Chuck Connor was, in fact, the only person who got his bids in by the so-called deadline and I did tell him verbally that he would win these items outright because of his good timekeeping! However, on reflection this seemed a little unfair since some copies didn't get sent out until January. I've therefore unilaterally decided that bids received from those whose copies weren't posted until very late should be valid. Sorry Chuck.
- Chuck Connor – Sikander 1-4, Seamonsters 4, By British
£10 the packaged 6 items (£1.67 per item)
Ornithopters 7-11 inclusive, Bugs 2
£6 for the 6 items (£1 per copy – great mathematician eh?)- Irwin Hirsh – Sikander 1 (filing system go wrong then Irwin?) A$2 (£1)
Seamonsters 4 – A$4 (£2)
Nutz 1 – A$2 (£1)- D M Sherwood – Ornithopters 7-11 – £5 the package (£1 each)
- Ron Salomon – Nutz 1 & 2, Stomach Pump 1 & 2 US$5 (£3.43 at today's exchange rate of 1.46) which gives 86p per item
- Nick Shears – Ballard's 'News From the Sun' – £3
- Dave Collins – Mini Footrot Flats – £2. Unfortunately the Deep Space Dave also put in a bid for was in by mistake last time, and in fact has already been sold. Sorry Dave.
Dave Collins gets Mini Footrot and Nick Shears gets the Ballard outright, Ron Salomon gets the Stomach Pumps and Nutz 2 for US$3.75 and Chuck Connor gets Sikanders 2-4 inc, By British and Bugs 2 for a total of £7.88 – come on folks, let's have your money.
Second-round:–
For those items with more than one bid, we now go into a second and final round of bidding.
- 1) Sikander no.1 – Chuck Connor has bid £1.67 and Irwin £1.
- 2) Ornithopter nos. 7-11 inclusive – Chuck £1 and D M Sherwood £1
- 3) Seamonsters no.4 – Chuck yet again (sorry about this, nothing personal!) £1.67 and Irwin £2.
- 4) Nutz no.l – hard as it might be to believe, Chuck Connor hasn't actually entered a bid for this one! This time its Irwin at £1 and Ron Salomon with 86p who are at loggerheads.
Unless I hear to the contrary with increased bids, the above will stand and the person with the highest bid will become the proud owner of the fanzine of their choice.
The deadline for my receipt of second round bids is 12 April 1987, (and yes, I really do mean it this time – I've proofread the date at least 3 times to make sure I haven't got it wrong again. GUFFSTUFF 5 will be out, hopefully, by May 1, though it might be slightly later, since I'm taking exams on April 29th, so I might be a little too preoccupied to get the editing completely finished before the end of the month.
Below is an updated list of items for auction, and some for sale with minimum prices. The procedure will be the same as last time. Auction material will go automatically to uncontested bids, otherwise a second round of bidding will ensue to decide the outcome. Should I receive more than one offer for items that are listed for sale, first choice will go to the person offering the highest price. if there is more than one at the same highest price, first-come- first-served will reign.
