GUFFAWE is published on an irregular basis by the Australasian GUFF administrator: Irwin Hirsh, 2/416 Dandenong Rd, Caulfield North, Victoria 3161, AUSTRALIA; phone: (03) 527-2402. The European administrator is Eve Harvey, 43 Harrow Rd, Carshalton, Surrey SH5 3QH, UK. August 1988
VOTES are still being accepted in the 1988-89 GUFF race. For further details on this race please see accompanying GUFF ballot. Please note the voting deadline: 26 November 1988. The next issue of GUFFAWE will be. published in December and will carry complete details on how the vote went.
NO PREFERENCE? A couple of people have asked me why there is no No Preference (NP) option on the current GUFF ballot forms. There is a easy answer to this inquiry, which is that NP has never actually appeared on a GUFF ballot form, so there is nothing new with this race. But the absence of NP has never stopped some people writing it in.
On the other hand, there does seem to be some confusion about NP. Some fan fund . administrators have counted them in as votes, others putting them aside when tallying up the votes. Justin Ackroyd, for instance, is in the former camp: in the 1987 vote he counted in NP and then eliminated it as if it is a vote. (In fact, at least one person went from a NP 'vote' to preferring one of the candidates. Strikes me as an Odd State of Affairs.) I, however, take the alternate view, that NP is not a vote but a donation to the fund. A NP voter is supporting the fund but is abstaining from the actual vote. If someone can't decide between the candidates or feels they don't know enough about the candidates to make an informed choice, then NP is for them.
JANICE MURRAY writes "It is quite easy for me to get Australian currency. I am willing to do this for American fen." Thanks Janice for the offer. Any American fan wishing to take Janice up on the offer can write to her at PO Box 75684, Seattle, WA 98125-0684, USA. I'd imagine a stamp would be appreciated when writing to Janice.
THANK YOU TO

TRIP REPORT NEWS The final chapter of my GUFF trip report was published in the 16th issue of LARRIKIN, the fanzine I publish with Perry Middlemiss. Copies are available from me for $1.00 (plus 50¢ for postage.) This was the first chapter of my report to be published. More news on further chapters as they are published.
DUFF 1990 While the concerns of GUFF only affect DUFF indirectly, the supporters of both funds are generally the same people. So I hope you don't mind if I take some of this here GUFFspace to toss up some questions about DUFF. As it currently stands the next Australia-to-North America DUFF race will be held in 1990. Up till, now the Australian DUFF winner has gone to the Worldcon, but the 1990 Worldcon isn't being held in North America. What is going to happen to DUFF in 1990? Should we hold over having a race? And if we do run a race, which convention does the winner go to? I think it is rather short-sighted to go into the race without some discussion. So, what do you think?
THE BY-MAIL AUCTION Not many bids have been placed in the first auction, but despite that the top bids so far total about $200. My thanks to the five people who have put in bids.
Listed below are two auction lists. The first list is a progress report on the auction which started in the last issue. The deadline for bids in this auction is the 17th of December 1983 (moved back a few weeks from the originally announced deadline.) Winning bids will be announced in the next issue of GUFFAWE. The deadline of the second auction is the 15th of April 1989, and a progress report will be published in the next issue of GUFFAWE. Please make all bids in Australian dollars. (On the current rates of exchange one Aussie dollar is worth 46p UK, 80¢ US, and $1.20 NZ.) If the total of your winning bids per auction is less than $20 I'll be asking you to contribute a dollar or two towards postage and I may be willing to accept payment in US or NZ $. People who live in the UK can send their money to Eve Harvey, rather than me, should they win some bids. In the event of two or more people tieing for the top bid, the winner will be the one who got their bid in first.
