GUFFAWE SEVEN

GUFFAWE is published by the Australian GUFF administrator Irwin Hirsh, at 2/416 Dandenong Road, Caulfield North, Victoria 3161, Australia; phone: (03) 527-2402. For details about the new European administrator, see below.

AND THE WINNER IS... The 1988-9 GUFF race is over, and the winner is Roelof Goudriaan. Roelof will attend the 1989 National Con, Swancon 14, in Perth, Western Australia. So, if you are attending Swancon do the right thing and buy Roelof a drink and/or a meal. Okay?

THE VOTES A total of 95 votes were received by the two administrators. And the vote count went like this:

AUS EUR TOTAL
Roelof Goudriaan 34 16 50
Linda Pickersgill 11 31 42
no preference 3 - 3
Total 48 47 95

There are a couple of things to note about the vote. First off, none of the three No Preference votes were intended to be that way. One person didn't include the minimum voting fee with his vote, so I downgraded the vote to NP. The other two came about when Justin Ackroyd lost three votes which he collected at Conviction, in June. I wrote to the three people asking them to send in replacement votes; only one did so. With one of those votes we don't actually know who voted, all we know is who gave the vote to Justin.

In addition, Eve Harvey moved house about three weeks prior to the voting deadline. In that three weeks Eve noted that it takes two days for mail to be re-directed from her old Carshalton address, so we decided to delay counting the votes for two days, to see what mail was re-directed from Carshalton.

THE VOTERS The following people sent their votes to the Australian administrator:

Justin Ackroyd – James Allen – Geogre Bondar – Stephen Boucher – Andrew Brown – Peter Burns – Jackie Causgrove – Shelley Dutton Berry – Roy Ferguson – John Foyster – Jeanne Gomoll – Michael Hailstone – Carey Handfield – JHerman – Greg Hills – Mathias Hofmann – Andrew Hooper – Richard Hryckiewicz – Lucy Huntzinger – Robin Johnson – Jerry Kaufman – Cathy Kerrigan – Eric Lindsay – Gordon Lingard – Dave Locke – Mark Loney – LynC – Kevin MacLean – Lyn McConchie – Mark Manning – Perry Middlemiss – Robyn Mills – Michelle Muijsert – Janice Murray – Clive Newall – Cath Ortlieb – Marc Ortlieb – Marilyn Pride – Yvonne Rousseau – Steve Roylance – Gerald Smith – Alan Stewart – Lucy Sussex – unknown – Phil Ware – Jean Weber – Roger Weddall – Judy Wilson.

In addition, Sean McMullen sent in a non-voting contribution and late votes were received from Garry Dalrymple, Dick Smith and Leah Zeldes Smith. Roger Weddall tells me he collected two late votes but he hasn't yet passed them on to me.

A geographical breakdown of the voters is as follows: NSW – 8, SA – 2, Tas – 1, Victoria – 25, USA – 11, West Germany – 1, United Kingdom – 1, New Zealand – 1.

Of interest is the fact that more votes came from the US city of Seattle than came from six of Australia's states and territories. Questions along the lines of "Why?" should be directed to the business meeting of the Australian Natcon.

GUFF, always on the lookout of ways to add to its coffers, will happily release a list of people who didn't vote, for the right price. Let's see, I could start with a list of still active, past fan fund winners and candidates who didn't vote....

THE BY-MAIL AUCTIONS Below are two lists. The first list contains the final results of the first by-mail auction. The second list is a progress report of the second auction, which had a deadline of the 15th of April, I989. The first list has the name of the item in capitol letters, which is followed by a full list of voters and their bids. The winner of the bid for each item is underlined, as is their winning bid. In the case of ties, the winner is the one who entered their bid first. Following this list is the amount that each bidder owes to GUFF.

The second list contains all bids entered so far in the auction. Bids can be made anytime until the auction deadline. Please make all bids in Australian dollars (on current rates of exchange, an A$ is equal to US84.78, NE81.35 and UK46.92p.) If the total of your winning bids per auction is less than #20 I'll be asking you to contribute a dollar or two towards postage. No bids can be entered with conditions attached – for instance, you can't raise your current high bids conditional on a rival bid being entered. On the other hand, I am willing to answer any query about the status of a bid, provided you include return postage or a couple of IRCs, so that I can respond to your letter.
